Siamese cats are known for their beauty and are among one of the most attractive cats you can have. These elegant and vocal felines are loyal and affectionate. However, one of their most amazing features of a Siamese cat with blue eyes is its beautiful bright eyes. You might wonder, Do all siamese cats have blue eyes? The answer is Yes. All purebred siamese cats have blue eyes because of their genes. Only siamese cats that are mixed with other breeds can have different eye colors.

Siamese Cat Genetics

Siamese cats are known for their unique fur pattern. They have light body colors, but their face, paws and tail are darker. This is called a “pointed Coat”. Overtime people have bred siamese cats to create different pointed coats, such as Seal Point, Chocolate Point, Blue Point, Lilac Point. All siamese cats have beautiful blue eyes, no matter what the color of their point.

Because of their genes siamese cats have their special coat colors. A change in gene called tyrosinase (TYR) causes their pattern. This gene is recessive, which means it should be present in both the parents, to be expressed in the kitten. This gene gives siamese cats their temperature sensitive coloration.

Siamese kittens are born all white, because their bodies are warm. As they grow older, the extremities get darker. This drop in temperature occurs because of Himalayan Gene, which turns on in cooler areas and makes color appear. That’s how siamese cats gets their pointed pattern.

How Siamese Cat with Blue Eyes Get its Color?

Basically, Siamese cat blue eyes aren’t blue because of the color pigment, they look blue because there is no pigment (melanin) in front of the eye. Light goes into the eye and scatters, since blue light scatters the most, so that’s the color we see.

Kittens are born with blue eyes. If they start developing pigment in iris, their eye color changes to brown, yellow, green or amber by around 7-9 weeks old. Likewise siamese kittens are born all white, and develop markings over time. Once the kittens are exposed to a cooler atmosphere outside the mother’s body, they start developing pigment around the point areas and get their permanent coat color.

One unique fact is, the shade of blue eyes in different point colors is different. Like, a Seal Point Siamese cat might have deep blue eyes, Lilac Point Cat might have light blue eyes with a bit of grey.

Conclusion:

Siamese cats are known for being very beautiful and special. Their apple or wedge shaped head, eye – catching pointed fur and bright blue eyes makes them unique. That’s why they are often seen in movies and are thought of as royal cats. All siamese cats have blue eyes because of their genes, they are special in their own way.
